Runcorn Transporter Bridge in 1909

Runcorn/Widnes Transporter bridge

The first bridge between Runcorn and Widnes which allowed carts etc. to cross the Mersey without getting wet.

This view is from the west side of the bridge taken from Widnes with Runcorn on the opposite bank. The ship in the river appears to be a "Mersey Flat", a shallow draught vessel suitable for the Mersey and its many sandbanks. This is identical view to that shown in the "moonlight" PC, shown on another web page.

The message reads:-

My dear Nelly
Hope you arrived safe and had a pleasant journey. Good luck from Marie(?). Having a good time on board with your sickness wouldn't you rather be drinking ?
