Halton Castle

Halton Castle

Date c.1100 A.D.

One of only two Norman Castles remains in Cheshire, the other being Beeston Castle. Built on the hilltop at Halton with extensive views from the Welsh Mountains in the west to Derbyshire in the east. Founded by Nigel, the first Baron of Halton around 1070-1080 probably as a wooden Motte and Bailey castle, and rebuilt in stone by his son, William. It was slighted after the Civil War.
