5. THE TOWN OF RUNCORN

In 1848 Anglican day schools were built in Pool Lane1 and in 1853 a Ragged School was built by the Johnson brothers on Mill Brow.

During this time the industries of Runcorn continued to grow, although Nickson states that slower progress was made in the decade 1851-1861 although during the following decade 'prosperity increased again'2 .
